Bite Problems

Issues such as overbites, underbites and crossbites - known as “malocclusions” - are fairly common in children and adults in the UK. However, this does not mean that they should be left untreated. At Accessible Orthodontics, we offer various treatments to correct any jaw issues that are causing you physical or emotional problems.

Common Bite Problems

Malocclusions occur when your upper and lower teeth don’t fit together correctly; this misalignment can happen for various reasons, such as genetics, thumb-sucking in childhood, or injury.

Common Types of Bite Problems Include

  • Chev Icon
Overbite: When the upper front teeth overlap the lower front teeth excessively.
  • Chev Icon
Underbite: When the lower front teeth extend past the upper front teeth.
  • Chev Icon
Crossbite: When some upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth rather than outside.
  • Chev Icon
Increased Overjet: When the upper front teeth protrude significantly past the lower front teeth.
  • Chev Icon
Cusp-to-Cusp Bite: When the biting surfaces of the upper and lower teeth meet edge-to-edge instead of the upper teeth fitting slightly over the lower teeth.
  • Chev Icon
Open bite: When the upper and lower teeth don’t touch, creating a gap when the mouth is closed.

Issues That Can Arise from Bite Problems

Untreated bite problems can lead to various dental and health issues later in life if they are left untreated, which is why we suggest that children have an orthodontic assessment around 8 years old.

If you don’t treat malocclusions, common issues that can arise include:
