What Are the Alternatives to Braces?

Although metallic braces are the most common type of orthodontic treatment worldwide, they’re not the only effective method. If you want to correct common orthodontic issues without the look and feel of traditional braces, options such as aligners are equally as effective but offer unique benefits, too. This article will assess these alternatives to braces, helping you to understand all your options for a healthier, straighter smile!
What Are the Common Concerns About Metallic Braces?
Metallic braces are the cheapest and most accessible option for many people in the UK, but there are several reasons why some people are keen to avoid them:
- They are the most noticeable braces available, which may cause patients to feel self-conscious.
- They are bigger and can cause more discomfort.
- They can require more frequent adjustment appointments than other options, such as lingual braces or clear aligners.
- They may cause oral hygiene difficulties, since they may trap food and plaque.
- The pulling of the wires may cause some mild discomfort at the start of treatment.
- There are some strict dietary requirements, such as avoiding sticky or chewy foods.
- There’s a long waiting list for those wanting free NHS braces (under 18s only).
5 Alternatives to Metal Braces
If you require orthodontic treatment but would prefer to avoid metal fixed braces, there are five alternatives which many patients opt for instead. Let’s take a look at what they are, their benefits, and how much they cost:
1. Ceramic Braces
Perhaps the closest type of treatment to traditional braces, ceramic fixed braces are also attached to the front of the teeth using brackets and archwires. However, the brackets use translucent or tooth-coloured ceramic materials instead, making them much more discreet. On average, they cost between £2,800 to £4,500.
Benefits of Ceramic Braces
- Smooth and Comfortable: Their rounded edges reduce irritation to gums and cheeks.
- Less Noticeable: The brackets blend in with the natural tooth colour, making them more discreet.
- Stain-Resistant: Ceramic brackets from suppliers like 3M are particularly stain-resistant.
- Quick Start: Unlike some other methods, ceramic braces can be fitted almost immediately.
2. Lingual Braces
Sometimes known as “Incognito braces”, Lingual fixed braces are a specialist treatment method. These braces are concealed behind your teeth, making them invisible from the outside, and are precision-crafted to perfectly suit your teeth and arch shape. On average, they cost between £3,700 to £8,800.
Benefits of Lingual Braces
- Invisible: Lingual braces are fixed behind your teeth, making them invisible to others.
- Convenient: They require fewer practice visits, offering greater self-management.
- Custom-Made: They are customised to perfectly fit your teeth and arch shape.
- Effective: They are particularly effective in treating complex cases, like deep overbites.
3. Aligners
Aligners are clear, removable plastic trays designed to gradually shift your teeth into the correct position - without the need for traditional braces. Popular brands of this treatment method include Invisalign and Angel, which are both used around the world. Aligners offer a discreet, comfortable, and flexible alternative to correcting most mild to moderate issues, and they typically cost between £3,000 to £5,000.
Benefits of Aligners
- Removable: Unlike braces, aligners are not fixed to your teeth.
- Optimal Oral Hygiene: By removing your aligner, it is easier to clean your teeth.
- Self-Managed: Aligners are easier to self-manage, leading to fewer practice visits.
- Comfortable: They are considered to be more comfortable than braces.
4. Self-Ligating Braces
Self-ligating braces are fixed appliances that use a built-in sliding mechanism to secure the archwire, eliminating the need for elastic or metal ties. This treatment method reduces friction and can sometimes shorten treatment time, making it a convenient option for many. On average, self-ligating braces cost between £3,000 to £6,000.
Benefits of Self-Ligating Braces
- Easy Cleaning: They are easier to clean due to the absence of metal or rubber ties.
- Shorter Treatment: Treatment is often faster since the teeth shift into position quicker.
- Less Discomfort: With less friction, patients often find these braces more comfortable.
- Fewer Appointments: They often involve fewer adjustments and less time at appointments.
5. Palatal Expanders
Palatal expanders are orthodontic devices used to widen the upper jaw and correct common issues such as crossbites or overcrowding. They are mainly used for children and teenagers to take advantage of their growing jawbone, as it is still naturally flexible, unlike in adults. It is worth noting that palatal expanders are typically used in preparation for further orthodontic treatment, rather than as a total treatment method itself.
Benefits of Palatal Expanders
- Reduces Crowding: This method creates additional space to correct crowded teeth.
- Improved Breathing: Palatal expanders can open up airways to improve breathing.
- Compatibility: They can be combined with aligners or braces for strong treatment.
- Reduced Surgical Need: This device can reduce the need for oral surgery later in life.
Are These Alternatives Available on the NHS?
Unlike metal braces, these alternative orthodontic treatments are not available on the NHS, and therefore must be self-funded through a private orthodontist. Private orthodontic clinics don’t come with as much of a waiting time as the NHS (if at all), giving you access to important treatment as and when you need it. Also, these treatments are available to those over the age of 18, unlike free NHS braces, which are only for children and teenagers.
If you’re worried about the cost of private treatment, our clinic offers several repayment methods to help you spread the costs. These methods, such as interest-free finance, help orthodontics become more accessible for those in need.
